Abstract

714,718. Ion trapping in cathode ray tubes PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 8, 1952 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 564/52. Class 39(1) The magnetic deflecting field of an ion trap is the stray field of a magnet located outside the tube envelope between the cathode and the ion trapping deflection point 15, Fig. 1, of the beam, preferably at the location shown by dotted lines 10, the beam being shielded from the direct field of the magnet by a tubular ferromagnetic screen 13. In alternative forms the anode 3 may be of ferromagnetic material, Fig. 4 (not shown), or electrodes 6, 3, 2 are of progressively decreasing diameter, and a tube of ferromagnetic material is supported on 6 and extends around 3 and 2, Fig. 5 (not shown). The ferromagnetic material may be iron or nickel and the ion trap magnet is a permanent one. The second anode 5, which traps the ions, is preferably bent as shown and may have a diaphragm at or near its left-hand end, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The main advantage of the invention is that the focusing coil 12 can be moved axially to extend right up to the deflection point 15, to allow more electrons to pass through aperture 8 and so to increase the range of contrast of the image. The focusing coil can be replaced by a permanent magnet.
