Abstract

703,323. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 5, 1948 [Feb. 5, 1947], No. 3343/48. Class 39(1) An ion trap comprises a pair of electrodes which surround the beam and produce an asymmetrical field which deflects the beam away from the tube axis, a magnetic field returning to the axis only the electrons in the beam. Ceramic rods 18, 20, Fig. 1, support a control electrode 24, and cylindrical electrodes 36, 40 which have inclined adjacent ends to produce a lens which concentrates and deflects the beam. A pair of electromagnetic pole pieces 49 deflect back the electrons which are further aligned by a pair of poles 51 secured to extensions 58 on the electromagnet 55. Apertured discs 25, 37 closing the ends of electrodes 24, 36 produce a cross-over at point 39. The electrode 40 is also closed by apertured discs, and the beam is deflected by scanning coils 9 and focused on to the fluorescent screen 11 by the final anode 46 consisting of a graphite coating. The field from magnets 49 may be concentrated by L-shaped polepieces mounted on opposite sides of electrode 36 to secure sharper deflection of the electrons. The electrodes 36, 40 consist of semi-cylindrical sheet members welded together at their sides which join the supports. They may be formed by cutting a cylinder at the required angle which is preferably 76¢ degrees to the axis. In another form, the electrode 40 is connected by spring fingers to the anode coating 46, the beam being focused electromagnetically. The inclined electrostatic lens may be produced by inclined apertured discs mounted within the adjacent ends of the electrodes 36, 40 Fig. 5 (not shown), or by providing only one of the adjacent ends of the electrodes 36, 40 with an inclined face. The Specification includes examples of the electrode potential. Specification 668,161 is referred to.
