Abstract

674,758. Electron beam apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 12, 1949, No. 21015/49. Class 39 (i). An arrangement for focusing a space charge limited electron beam 17 in a tunnel 9 in which the divergence of the beam is counteracted by an axial magnetic field, has electrostatic focusing of the beam so that it converges from the cathode 15 and is substantially parallel to the axis of the tunnel at the entrance 12 thereof and is substantially free from magnetic influence up to that point. The tunnel 9 is positioned between two pole-pieces 10, 11, the former being hollow and containing the cathode 15 and a focusing electrode 16, its inner surface acting as anode and forming an entrance tunnel of diameter d<SP>1</SP> and throat diameter d. Design of the electron gun gives the appropriate shape of beam, which is also obtainable by special guns having shaded pole-pieces. The diameter of tunnel 9 is larger than the entrance aperture d. The gun is shown applied to a two resonator klystron with drift tube 19 and resonant cavities 20, 21 each comprising a pair of discs, one 22 of nickel iron with a coefficient of expansion the same as glass and the other 23 of copper, the discs being clumped together by annular collars 24, 25. Tuning is by adjustable screws 26. Tubular extensions 30, 31 'are aligned with drift tube 19 to give interaction gaps 32, 33. Hollow pole-pieces 34, 35 house the electron gun and collector electrode respectively and are joined as a magnetic circuit by a permanent magnet 43 and yoke arms 44. The pole 34 is thick enough to screen the gun from the magnetic field. The focusing arrangement is similarly applied to a travelling wave tube, Fig. 4 (not shown), the helix being supported on quartz rods and fitted with probes and enclosed at each end by wave-guides. The magnetic circuit is completed as in Fig. 3. Beams of non-circular cross-section, e.g. rectangular, may be employed.
