Abstract
663,869. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1948 [Oct. 31, 1947], No. 24410/48. Class 39 (i). A travelling-wave amplifier comprises a wave-guide having cylindrical symmetry and having a slow mode of propagation for electromagnetic waves, and means projecting an annular beam of electrons coaxially inside the wave-guide from an electron gun under the influence of an axial static magnetic field and a radial static electric field, the gun being within the magnetic field and the beam imparting energy continuously to the waves propagated in the wave-guide. The waveguide may comprise a helically-wound ribbon 25 supported by three insulating rods 24, of which one is shown, and terminated by radiating antennµ 26, 27 connected to electrodes 23, 30. Along the axis of the helix there is provided an electrode 35 which is supported by insulators 36, 37 and connected to electrodes 21, 34 by spring members 38, 39 which may be provided with a coating to increase the attenuation: an electric field between the electrode 35 and the helix serves to remove ions and this suppress one cause of parasitic oscillations. The distance between two consecutive turns of the helix may be made equal to the distance the electrons travel in half a period. The electron gun may comprise a focusing. member 15 supported by three insulating rods 19 and supporting a mica disc 18 on which the annular cathode 13 is mounted. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the ribbon may be uniformly attenuated along the helix or at given points. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
