Abstract

670,248. High frequency discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1948 [Feb. 4, 1948], No. 24411/48. Class 39 (i). A transverse travelling wave tube comprises a transmission line or wave-guide in which waves are transmitted in a transverse electromagnetic or a transverse electric mode, an apertured electron accelerating means associated with a multiplicity of electron sources, and means for projecting transversely across the line is wave-guide only those electrons which enter the apertures of the accelerating means, the accelerating means and the electron sources being so arranged that in the absence of a magnetic field the electrons do not enter the apertures, but under the influence of the magnetic vectors of waves travelling in one direction in the line or wave-guide, or of the magnetic vectors of auxiliary waves dependent on the first waves electrons are diverted to enter the apertures only where the electric field across the line or wave-guide is directed towards the apertures. In Fig. 3 the wave to be amplified is propagated along the coaxial line defined by conductors 3 and 4, and an auxiliary wave is propagated along the coaxial line defined by conductors 4 and 5. A plurality of cathodes 6 are arranged along the axis, a pair of conductors 8 supplying the heating current. The potentials on the electrodes 4 and 5 and their arrangement are such that electrons cannot normally pass into the space between conductors 3 and 4; but under the influence of the magnetic vector of the auxiliary wave, which may be derived from the main wave, electrons are deflected into the space between conductors 3 and 4 at times when the electric field of the main wave opposes them so that they give up energy to the main wave. Figs. 6 and 7 show an embodiment utilizing a circular wave-guide 14 provided with an apertured auxiliary electrode 18, a plurality of cathodes 15, and a collecting electrode 17 insulatively but capacitatively connected to the wall of the wave-guide 14. A further embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), utilizes a hollow wave-guide of square cross-section.
