Abstract
480,948. Cathode-ray tubes. NICOLL, F. H. July 25, 1936, No. 20604. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent deterioration of the screen by ion bombardment the beam is so focused by a combination of electrostatic and magnetic fields that the ions and electrons are separated and the former intercepted by a stop or screen. The Figure shows the invention applied to a tube such as that described in Specification 431,327. The beam, after leaving the cathode screen 2 is focused by a magnet coil 3 and passes through a modulator electrode 4 and anode 6 and is later focused by an electrostatic lens formed by the electrode 8. The ion beam takes the form indicated by. the dotted lines and is intercepted by a stop 10, the electron beam proceeding as indicated by the full lines and for the most part escaping the stop. The arrangement may be such that the spread of the ion beam is greater than that of the electron beam and it is intercepted by partitions such as that shown in the end 5 of the anode 6. Specifications 428,525 and 458,270 also are referred to.
