Abstract

495,707. Cathode - ray tubes ; Rontgen-ray tubes. NICOLL, F. H. April 17, 1937, No. 11003. [Class 39 (i)] The ratio of voltages applied to the electrodes 7, 8 of a single electron lens is so high that the beam is brought to an intermediate focus within the lens field and is further focused at a point which is free from the lens field. The beam may be emitted from a thermionic cathode 5 or from a photo-electric cathode upon which an image is projected. In the form shown, the beam is focused by the cylinders 7, 8 on to the anticathode 9. The lens may comprise two apertured diaphragms, and the beam may be focused onto a fluorescent screen or onto a mosaic screen in a transmitting tube. An image of an object, such as a grid, placed within the cylinder 7 may be produced on the screen. The voltage ratio is greater than 70 to 1 and may be as great as several thousand to one. The Specification contains examples of voltages and dimensions of the electrodes.
