[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In television transmission a picture is focused on to a mosaic 33 of photo-electric elements insulated from each other and acting as a control grid for a cloud of electrons from a cathode source 2 of extended area ; the electron emission from the mosaic due to the picture varies the potential of the elements and thereby the number of electrons passing through the mosaic to form an electron image which is focused on to a fluorescent screen or on a double-sided mosaic 38 used in signal transmission. A suitably biassed grid 54 collects the secondaries emitted from the mosaic 38. An impulse generator 49 supplies the deflecting coils 47 and also the biassing current for the photo-electric mosaic 33.
