Abstract

468,483. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21448. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] An electronic scanning device for television and like image transmission systems comprises a primary electron beam generating means 1, 2, 3, and a photo-electric control electrode 7, between which is interposed a thin sheet 6 of metal treated to emit secondary electrons, whereby when the sheet is bombarded by the primary scanning beam a moving beam of secondary electrons is generated adjacent the face of the electrode, 7. The electrode 7 is a metal grid coated with insulation which carries a mosaic of insulated photo-electric elements which when illuminated assume potentials corresponding to the picture. The moving beam of secondary electrons is modulated by these elements and the resultant picture signal current flows to anode 8. Electrostatic deflecting plates 4, 4<1> scan the primary electron beam. The metallic portion of electrode 7 is maintained negative with respect to the sheet 6. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the replacement of the sheet 6 by any screen electrode producing a beam of electrons of decreased velocity adjacent the face of the control electrode for example a mesh grid at negative potential with respect to the cathode. In another modification, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), the photoelectric elements 23 are applied to one side only of the supporting grid 21, which itself acts as a decelerating screen. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
