Abstract

505,618. Cathode-ray tubes; imagedissectors; electron multipliers. LUB SZYNSKI, H. G., and McGEE, J. D. Nov. 10, 1937, No. 30796. [Class 39 (i)] An optical image is formed on a grid covered with photo-voltaic material, such as selenium or cuprous oxide, on which is a metal mosaic; the grid is flooded or scanned by an electron beam which is modulated by the potentials formed in the photo-voltaic cells constituting the screen and the modulated beam used to produce picture signals. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the grid 1 is flooded with electrons from cathodes 4 enclosed in screens 11, which may be so arranged as to produce a virtual cathode in front of the screen as indicated by the dotted line 6. The modulated beam is focused in the ordinary way on a fluorescent screen 9 ; multiplying grids 12 may be provided. The following modifications are described : (a) the fluorescent screen 9 is replaced by a mosaic screen not sensitive to light, and in capacity relation with an electrode connected to the output circuit, the screen is scanned by a cathode ray, (b) the modulated beam is scanned over a receiving electrode, forming an image-dissector, (c) the flooding beam is replaced by a scanning beam which is received on an electrode connected to the output circuit; in this case an accelerating, grid may be placed in front of the screen, which is itself at cathode potential, the grid may itself be secondarily emissive and of louvre construction so as to stop the primary beam. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 482,959.
