Abstract

452,125. Cathode-ray tubes. NICOLL, F. H., 17, The Drive, Ickenham, near Uxbridge, Middlesex. Feb. 13, 1935, No. 20237/36. Divided out of 452,012. [Class 39 (i)] In a circuit for television &c. transmission including a cathode-ray tube with an electrode system for focusing an electron beam on to a transmitting screen 11 and with means for deflecting the beam to scan the screen 11 to neutralize an electrostatic image of the picture to be transmitted, the two focusing electrodes 8, 9 nearest the screen 11 form an electron lens with the electrode 8 nearer the cathode 4 at a higher positive potential than the electrode 9. The tube shown has a cathode shield 5, an accelerator 6 and a modulating electrode 7, in addition to the anodes 8, 9 as described in Specification 431,327 and the electrodes are supplied from tappings on a potentiometer 12, 13. The anode 9 may be a silvering on the wall of the tube, and may be at the same potential as the accelerator 6 so that fluctuations in the currents to the electrodes 6, 9 neutralize one another and the size of the potentiometer and smoothing condensers can be reduced. The low potential on the anode 9 reduces secondary emission from the screen 11 and prevents secondary and cold-emission electrons from the anode 8 from reaching the screen. The screen may be a photo-electric mosaic and may be photoelectric on the side opposite to that scanned by the ray as described in Specification 419,452. Electrodes not focusing the ray, for example, a grid, may be placed in front of the screen 11. The Provisional Specification describes also subject-matter included in Specification 452,012.
