Abstract
475,928. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and LUBSZYNSKI, H. G. May 20, 1936, No. 14243. [Class 39 (i)] In transmitting images to a distance as described in Specification 442,666, the mosaic screen 4 is of a material for which the ratio of secondary electrons emitted to primary electrons arriving increases at A above unity and then decreases at B below unity as the velocity of the primary electrons increases. Electrons arrive at the screen 4 from the photo-electric cathode 1 with a velocity between those corresponding to the points A and B, and preferably with the velocity giving maximum secondary emission, to charge the mosaic elements positively and the electrons of the scanning ray 12 have a high velocity above the point B so that the ray reduces the potentials of the element to an equilibrium value. The photo-electrons may be accelerated by a ring 3 joined to the anode 9 of the scanning electron gun and may be focused by a long coil or by a short coil 2 giving magnification or reduction of the electron image. The optical image may be cast obliquely on to the side of the cathode 1 facing the ring 3 or may be cast on to the back of a transparent or grid-like cathode 1, or the cathode 1 and screen 4 may be oblique to the lens 2 and scanning by the ray 12 may then be arranged to compensate for distortions of the image. The elements of the screen 4 are of aluminium, carbon, beryllium or lithium borate ; or material of low workfunction such as zinc sulphide or lithium borate may be deposited on a mica backing. In modifications, the mosaic screen may be replaced by an insulator sheet of transverse resistance above 10<12> ohms per cm. or may comprise nickel elements on a mica sheet. Deposition of caesium on the screen 4 during sensitization of the cathode 1 is avoided by heating the screen, or by temporarily covering it with a flap, during the sensitization.
