Abstract

469,033. Cathode ray tubes. LUBSZYNSKI, H. G. Jan. 16, 1936, No. 1483. [Class 39 (i)] In a television or like system a mosaicscreen 3 is permeable by an electron beam supplied from a gun 5 and suitably deflected over the mosaic ; on the side of the mosaic remote from the gun the beam impacts on a target electrode 12, Fig. 1, to liberate secondary electrons which may be collected by an output anode 14 direct or after further impact on one or more target electrodes 13, suitable focusing coils 17, 18 being provided. An optical image is focused on the mosaic which has a grid-like form with photo-electric sensitive elements 9 ; the photo-electron emission from the elements controls the electro-static potential of the screen and thereby influences the strength of the beam from the gun passing through the mosaic A positively biassed shield 11 protects the target 12 from the mosaic and a grid 10 collects the emitted photo-electrons from the mosaic. To reduce the speed of the electron beam to the mosaic, the latter may be stabilized at cathode potential or a decelerating grid may be placed before the grid 10. The mosaic is formed of a mesh of fine, glass or enamel-covered wire with a layer of silver on one side, baked to break the silver into discrete elements, which are caesium coated. The charges on the elements of the mosaic may leak away slowly to the wire coils of the mesh forming the base of the mosaic. As shown the beam impacts the mosaic normally and the image projection is inclined ; these conditions may be reversed. The anode 14 may be in the form of a fluorescent screen ; the device may then be used as an image amplifier. With a high frequency multiplier, one 21 of the impact electrodes 21, 22 has a gap through which the beam from the mosaic may pass for multiplication; with this construction, if the optical image is projected normally on the mosaic and the electron beam at an angle, slats may be provided to cover the aperture in the electrode 21, the sides of these slats remote from the mosaic being coated to act as part of the electrode 21.
