Abstract
768,021. Cathode ray storage tubes. ELECTRICAL & MUSICAL INDUSTIRES, Ltd. Sept. 3, 1953 [Sept. 17, 1952], No. 23294/52. Class 39(1). An electronic charge storage tube 1 includes a target electrode 6 comprising a foraminated electrode of electrically conducting material, such as a metal mesh having a 1000 meshes per linear inch, having a coating of photo-conductive material, such as antimony tri-sulphide or cadmium sulphide, at least on one side thereof, means 2, 3, 4 for generating electrons which impinge on the coating to cause charges to be stored thereon, an electron gun 8, 9, 9a generating a beam of electrons for reading the charges applied to the coating, and an electron collecting electrode 5 to collect electrons passing through the target electrode 6, the tube being arranged so that light can be projected on to the photoconductive coating to cause the charges to leak to the conducting material. The electron generating means 2, 3, 4 includes a modulating electrode 3, and an electrostatic grid shield 7 and a mesh ion trap 11, are provided. Scanning coils 12, 13 and a solenoid coil 14 are provided externally of the tube. The electrons from the source 2, 3, 4 have such velocity that a greater number of secondary electrons are released from electrode 6 than are incident thereon so that electrode 6 becomes charged positively, and the electrons from the source 8, 9, 9a have a low velocity. Means for irradiating the photoconductive coating on the electrode 6 with light can be an external circular lamp 19, Fig. 1, an internal ring lamp 20, Fig. 2, a filamentary light source, 22, Fig. 3; comprising a number of parallel wires, which can also act as the collecting electrode, or a C.R.T. 25 producing an electron beam scanned over a fluorescent screen to produce a flying light spot projected by optical system 26 through circular window 27 on to electrode 6.
