Abstract

754,752. Television pick-up tubes. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. April 14, 1954 [June 30, 1953], No. 11054/54. Class 39 (1). A camera tube for converting light or X-ray images into electrical signals has a photo-conductive target and a flooding gun directing high energy electrons on to the target to charge it negatively at a predetermined rate. The gun 12 scans the target 74 with a beam giving a secondary emission greater than unity, the released electrons being collected by a ring electrode 13 to yield signals across the load 77. The target comprises a transparent support 72, a transparent conductive coating 73 and a photo-conductive layer 74, e.g. of selenium in its red vitreous form. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the target has an additional layer of luminescent material for converting an X-ray image into a visible light image affecting the photo-conductive layer and the collector electrode is a grid close to the front surface of the target.- The conductive layer of the target is at a positive potential and the continuous flooding by gun 16 prevents redistribution of secondary electrons. The graphs explaining the operation of the tube are included in the Specification.
