Abstract

902,090. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 28, 1958 [Nov. 12, 1957 ; April 24, 1958], Nos. 35142/57 and 13020/58. Class 39 (1). A photo-emissive mosaic 3, Fig. 1, has a transparent secondary emissive electrode 11, facing parallel to it, the mosaic being scanned by a light spot from source 16 which passes through electrode 11, means being provided for directing photo-electrons from the mosaic on to the electrode 11, and for the collection of the secondary electrons which it emits. As shown, an image is projected through window 5 on to transparent photo-electric layer 4. The electron image is focused by accelerating and retarding electrodes 7 and 8, and solenoid 9 on to glass target 2 which carries mosaic 3 on the other side. Facing the mosaic and close to it is a mesh grid 10 held at a slightly negative or positive potential to give a datum potential to the mosaic elements. Photo-electrons liberated from the mosaic by the scanning beam are accelerated on to the electrode 11 by means of the electrodes 19 and the electrode 11, which is carried on an optical window 13, forms the first stage of an electron multiplier 21 arranged in the annular space surrounding the re-entrant portion of the tube 15. The photo-emission from the mosaic is arranged to be out of focus when it strikes electrode 11. The annular electrodes may be circular, as shown, or radial. The multiplier 21, Fig. 2, is arranged around the mosaic 3, the electron image space being screened off from the multiplier electrodes by means of screen 26. The secondary emissive electrode is deposited in the flat end wall and is surrounded by the cupshaped electrode 24 which forms the next stage of the multiplier, the solenoid 9 being terminated short of this electrode to enable the electrons to take the correct path 22.
