Abstract
653,835. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 2, 1947, No. 14600. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] In a television or like cathode-ray pick-up tube in which a charge image is formed by a photo-electric cathode 2, Fig. 1, on a target electrode 4 which is scanned by an electron beam produced directly or indirectly by an electron gun having a cathode 11, an apertured control electrode 10 and an apertured first anode 7 and wherein the photoelectric cathode 2 is in the line of sight of the said apertures, the incandescent cathode 11 of the electron gun is so constructed and arranged that light therefrom cannot reach the photo-electric cathode 2. This is achieved by arranging the emissive surface 12 of the annular indirectly-heated cathode 11 to face away from screen 4 and by providing a reflecting electrode 17 to reflect the electrons but not light from the cathode back along the axis. Alternatively electrode 17 may be replaced by a secondary emissive electrode, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that the impinging primary electrons generate a beam of secondaries in the opposite direction. The gun includes control electrode 10 and anode 7, the front surface 8 of which serves as the first dynode for multiplying the electrons repelled by target 4, the secondaries from dynode 8 being deflected by " persuader " electrode 20 into the other multiplying stages 9. An accelerating screen electrode 16 is interposed between cathode 11 and reflector electrode 17. Photoelectrons from photo-cathode 2 are accelerated by electrode 3 and impinge on glass target 4 associated with collecting screen 5 and a charge image is built up on target 4. Glass target 4 is translucent and is mounted in grounded metal frame 24, and a decelerating electrode 6 is provided in front thereof. A wall coating 19 is also provided. Vertical and horizontal deflecting coils mounted on frame 21 are adjustable axially by rod 21<SP>1</SP>, and auxiliary coil 22 which is rotationally adjustable serves to centre the beam. Focusing coil 23 is also provided. Specification 634,639 is referred to.
