Abstract

520,106. Cathode-ray tubes ; television. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 26, 1938, No. 31016. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1937. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] In a television transmitter of the iconoscope type in which the signal currents are derived from the electrons emitted by the mosaic and picked up by an anode the back plate of the screen is replaced by a " virtual " back plate produced by projecting electrons on to it from cathodes on the side remote from the electron gun ; this renders it possible to employ a transparent screen and project the image to be transmitted on to the side remote from the electron gun, the screen being normal to the axis of the tube. In the arrangement shown the screen 16 is of mica and carries the mosaic 17, the image being focussed on to it through a flat space 5 in the tube opposite to the electron gun 2. Electrons are projected on to the rear of the screen from cathodes 18, 18a and patch produced may be given a special shape by means of anodes 19, 19a having perforations of the shape desired. A second image, to be combined with that projected on to the screen, can be formed by means of electron guns 21, 21a arranged to project suitably modulated beams on to the back of the screen at the point opposite to that struck by the ray from the gun 2, the different rays being deflected synchronously.
