Abstract

481,549. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 16, 1937, No. 10914. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube the beam defining aperture is formed by a doubly-convergent projection 20 on the anode 19, which has a disc 21 on its end ; the projection may be toroidal or of other form in cross section, the aperture 23 being of the same order as to size as the opening 18 in the control electrode 16. As shown any secondaries formed by primary impact on the projection 20 are collected on that projection so that there is a field free space within the aperture. A carbon coating 22 acts as a further accelerating anode at a higher potential than the anode 14, which is at the same or higher potential than the control cylinder. Contact is made to the coating 22 by one or more turns of wire 35 which is connected to a lead 36. Deflecting plates 27, 28 are carried from the pinch by leads 33, 34 encased in glass. An auxiliary cylindrical anode at the potential of the anode 19 may be used between the deflecting plates and the end of the anode 19. The beam scans a light - sensitive target 6 which receives a focused picture of an object 13. A fluorescent screen 11 is carried by a rotatable support 9 and is used in setting up the tube to determine the potentials to be applied to the anodes for the best results, or can be used for oscillograph purposes ; when the biassing has been fixed the support 9 is rotated by magnetic means and the screen is moved out of the way of the beam. British Specification 206,081, [Class 39 (i)], and U.S.A. Specification 1,613,954 are referred to.
