Abstract
748,945. Electron beam apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 26, 1953, No. 8392/53. Addition to 674,758. Class 39 (1). The high-current magnetically-shielded electron gun of the parent Specification is modified to make it suitable for the " Brillouin flow " condition by (a) providing a separate non- magnetic gun anode of smaller diameter than, and supported within, the exit aperture of the magnetic pole-piece or (b) allowing the electrostatic throat of the beam to form slightly beyond (one-tenth to twice the aperture diameter) the exit aperture. In one form the non- magnetic gun anode 44, Fig. 2, is supported within the aperture in the front wall of the polepiece 59 by screws 46. Cathode 41 and focusing electrode 43 are supported on insulating disc 48 bearing against internal shoulder 49 of the pole-piece, which is supported from the envelope by discs 51, 60. Disc 52 supports the tube 31 leading the beam into the utilization space, e.g. the helix of a travelling-wave tube, Fig. 1 (not shown), which may thus be given a different potential by lead 56. In another form, double magnetic shielding is provided by concentric magnetic cylinders 59, 64, Fig. 3, the inner one 64 being supported by the anode 60. Full dimensions are given of an example. The gun may also be used for klystrons.
