Abstract
603,088. Cathode-ray tubes. TRUB, TAUBER, & CO., AKT.-GES. Feb. 19, 1945, No. 4087. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] A cold-cathode electron beam source comprises a cathode 1 with a central crater of depth t and diameter k spaced from an apertured anode. 2 by a distance d at most equal to the mean free path of molecules, the dimensions being such that t>d and the anode aperture diameter B>d>k. The cathode is mounted in an insulator 4 fitting within the cylindrical part of anode 2 and the radial distance between the cathode and this part of the anode is at most equal to d. A beam defining electrode 7 is spaced a distance from anode 2 which is not less than B. It is stated that the discharge does not penetrate to the bottom of the crater, so that the source of electrons is virtually the glowing mass of gas within the crater and difficulties of cathode disintegration are avoided.
