Abstract
651,386. Cathode-ray tubes. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and BUCHANAN, W. H. Dec. 14, 1948, No. 32328. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent the defocusing of the scanning beams of high-vacuum cathode-ray tubes, especially those used in television reception, due to the varying beam current affecting the ionization of the residual gases within the tube, auxiliary measure provided for producing ionization of the tube gases. The anode 4 of the scanning beam 2 has an annular flange 5 carrying an auxiliary electron gun comprising a ring-shaped electron source 7, an annular beam concentrating electrode 8, and an accelerating electrode 9. The annular auxiliary beam 6 is composed of low velocity electrons which are caused to describe helical paths by the focusing field of the scanning beam, whereby the gases are ionized. The auxiliary beam 6 may ionize such a large proportion of the gas molecules that any additional ionization by the scanning beam 2 is of negligible -effect, or, alternatively, the beam 6 may be modulated in the opposite sense to that of the scanning beam 2 by applying a potential to the concentrating or accelerating electrodes 8, 9, whereby the ionization is maintained substantially constant. Numerical values of voltages which can be applied to the tube electrodes are given in the Specification.
