Abstract
723,504. Electron beam apparatus. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 14, 1952 [Nov. 20, 1951], No. 28769/52. Class 39 (1). An electron beam tube such as a coder tube for pulse code modulation, is provided with means for producing an electric field graduated in intensity, in the case of a flat beam, from a minimum at one edge to a maximum at the other edge of the beam, or in the case of a point beam, from one end to the other of the path over which the beam can be moved, so that the flat beam, or the beam path, can be aligned with a desired direction across the target structure. In the flat beam coder tube of Fig. 5, a pair of tilted plates 48, 49 between the gun 22 and the signal plates 50, 51, deflect and rotate the beam. The deflection may be cancelled out by applying a bias voltage to the plates 50, 51, or by providing a pair of opposition tilted plates, The beam is aligned with the aperture rows in the coding plate 57, behind which are the collecting strips 581-4. The electron gun may comprise a cathode, a control electrode, a focusing electrode, and a plurality of accelerating electrodes, a masking electrode having a beam limiting aperture being positioned in a field free space between two of the accelerating electrodes. The collecting strips 581-4 may be secondary emissive and negatively biased with respect to the coding plate 57. A hollow secondary electron collecting electrode is provided in front of the coding plate. The collecting strips may be non-secondary emissive, and positively biased to suppress secondary emission. The cathode 23, Fig. 4, and accelerating electrode 24, are assembled together with the aid of insulating spacers 37, 38, 39, within a shell 33. Cathode flange 41 is between spacers 37 and 38. The assembly is pressed against the accelerating electrode 25 by bent-up portions of a member 34 bearing against cathode heat baffle 36. The shell 33 and the electrode 25 are secured to the support rods 19 by clips 31, the insulating coating 20, on the rods 19, and by cement 21. Specifications 663,838; 663,872 and 679,730 are referred to.
