1,177,319. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 60381/68. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray tube with a deflection amplifying quadrupolar lens 5, Fig. 1, the astigmatic beam focusing effect of the quadrupolar field is compensated for by making the beam astigmatic before it enters the quadrupolar lens by means of a grin system 2 in which the first grid electrode has an opening which is non-rotationallysymmetrical, e.g. elliptical. The focusing lens 3 is rotationally-symmetrical. The gun 2 may be a triode gun or a tetrode gun, Fig. 4, in which the first grid 112 has an elliptical opening 128, the second grid 125 has a circular opening 129 and the accelerating electrode 113 is constituted by a spout-shaped portion of electrode 114 which forms with electrodes 115 and 116 the rotationally-symmetrical focusing lens 103. Due to the non-rotationally-symmetrical opening in the first grid the electrons appear to originate from two virtual, elongated crossovers and by matching the gun with the quadrupolar lens a circular beam spot is obtained on the target of the tube.
