Abstract

1,226,886. Colour television tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 60380/68. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray tube such as an indexing type colour television tube in which the beam is astigmatically focused as an elongated spot 13 on the target 3, Fig. 1, the undeflected beam 122, Fig. 5, is meridionally focused at a point 125 located in front of the target 103 so that the spot length does not vary rapidly with the deflection angle and does not exhibit a sharp minimum. In order that the width of the spot may be kept small on deflection of the beam, the meridional image plane of the X deflection means and the sagittal image plane of the Y deflection means coincide with the target. The electron-optical system may comprise an astigmatic focusing lens, e.g. a quadrupolar lens, or the electron gun may be astigmatic, e.g. a triode gun with the first grid electrode having an elliptical opening or a tetrode gun, Fig. 7, in which the first grid 49 has an elliptical opening 58 and a second grid 50 has a circular opening 59. The accelerating electrode 51 is formed by a spout-shaped portion of electrode 52 which forms with electrodes 53 and 54 a rotationally-symmetrical focusing lens. Suitable dimensions and voltages for the system are given.
