Abstract

1381018 Electron guns RCA CORPORATION 23 May 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 24107/72 Heading H1D An electron gun for a colour television tube of the shadow mask type, comprises means for generating three co-planar parallel beams and lenses in the path of each beam for focusing and converging the beams near the screen. In Fig. 4 the parallel beams are produced by the cathodes 37, control grid 27, screen grid 29, and first accelerating anode. Converging electric fields for the two outer beams are produced by displacing the outer apertures 73b of the second accelerating anode 33 about 6 mils. outwards relative to the co-operating apertures 67b in the first anode; the apertures 67 and 73 may be about 160 mils. and 172 mils. in diameter respectively. The large size and small spacing of these apertures may distort the beams into elliptical shapes and this distortion may be minimized by making the wall 69 barrel-shaped with radii of curvature of 8 inches in the plane of Fig. 4 and of 2À28 inches in the plane normal to Fig. 4. Coma distortion (different raster sizes) due to the eccentricity of the outer beams in the magnetic deflection field may be corrected by surrounding the outer apertures 87 in the shield cup 35 with shield rings 89 of magnetic material to cause a slight weakening of the magnetic field, and a further correction may be applied by providing discs 91 of magnetic material on each side of the central aperture 85 normal to the plane of Fig. 4. The electrodes are all mounted from two parallel glass rods (outlined at 23) the ends of which extend into recesses (outlined at 95) provided in the shield member 35.
