Abstract

1421865 Cathode-ray tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13604/73 Heading H1D The electron gun of a cathode-ray display tube includes a cathode, control grid, acceleration anode, and a lens for focusing the beam, the control grid aperture being non-rotationally symmetrical, having major and minor axes of symmetry, and a smaller area than an ellipse having the same axial ratio and width, whereby to limit the effective emission area of the cathode to an oval portion and result in the production of an astigmatic beam, the lens being positioned to bring the beam to a focus with a predetermined axial ratio, As described, the apertures 11 and 14 in the control grid and the first anode 3, respectively, are orthogonally oriented diamond-lilo shapes, as shown, the control grid being disposed 125 microns from the surface of the dispenser cathode 1. The resulting beam is focused by the lens system 4,5,6, the diaphragm 18 with circular aperture 17 limiting the diameter of the beam and intercepting grid emission. Dimensions, spacings, and voltages for the various components are given. Reference is made to the alternative use of grid apertures in the form of two intersecting circular arcs, and to the use of the gun in an indexing type colour tube, in which the phosphor stripes are parallel to the major axis of the control grid aperture. The non-circular beam, by reducing the effect of space charge, permits reduced cathode loading.
