Abstract

1,005,835. Travelling-wave tubes. EITEL-McCULLOUGH Inc. June 20, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 23830/62. Heading H1D. A travelling wave tube comprises an evacuated envelope enclosing an electron gun section 9, Fig. 1, for projecting an electron beam and a collector section 124 for collecting the beam, interaction means, e.g. a helix 137, interposed between the gun section and the collector section and arranged to provide interaction between the electron beam and an electromagnetic wave transmitted therealong, electromagnetic wave input and output couplers 152, 136 operatively associated with opposite ends of the interaction means, magnetic field producing means 116 surrounding the interaction means, the electron gun section including an electron gun assembly rigidly retained coaxially within a hollow cup 2, 8 by a dielectric spacer 28, and impedance matching means 147 operatively associated with the input coupler for providing an impedance match between a coaxial line 156, 157 outside the envelope and the interaction means. The cathode 51 is coaxially surrounded by a focusing electrode 31, 32 and co-operates with an apertured anode 12 having an axially extending collar 13. The magnetic field is produced by a permanent periodic magnetic stack formed by a plurality of thin annular ferrite members 161 separated by magnetizable pole pieces 162. The electron beam is collected within a cylindrical bore 131 formed within the collector electrode 124, the axis of the bore being at an angle to the tube axis. The interaction circuit is contained within a tubular metallic envelope portion 117, and in the case of the helix shown in Fig. 3, is held in place by three dielectric support rods 138 connected together by clips 139. Lossy material 140 may be provided along the length of the rods. Provision may be made, Fig. 4 (not shown) for firing a barium getter behind the gun section after final evacuation of the tube, and cooling fins 176 may be provided around the collector. The whole tube may be surrounded by encapsulating material 174 poured between the tube are an encapsulating sleeve 168, the material being of the type which rapidly solidifies to provide an impenetrable mass.
