Abstract

649,273. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 22, 1948, No. 2003. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] An electron velocity modulation device comprising an input and an output cavity resonator separated by a drift tube adapted to be held at a D.C. potential different from that of the resonators and means for projecting an annular beam of electrons in succession through the input resonator the drift tube and the output resonator is characterized in that the said resonators and drift tube are constructed of magnetic material and are adapted to be magnetically polarized so as to form a magnetic lens on either side of the drift tube, the drift tube being oppositely polarized at its two ends. In the arrangement shown, the drift tube 6 is made of magnetized steel, the magnetic circuit being completed by a soft iron cylinder 9 joining the input resonator 4 and the output resonator 8. The annular electron beam 12, Fig. 2, from the cathode 1 is brought to a crossover at the interaction gap formed by the reentrant wall of resonator 4. The magnetic field 13 between the end of the drift tube. and the adjacent resonator wall causes the divergent electron beam to be collimated as a hollow cylindrical beam through the drift tube 6. After emerging from the drift tube, the electron beam is converged again along the path 15 to form a cross-over at the interaction gap of resonator 8. Maintainance of the shape of the beam throughout the length of the drift tube may be assisted by means of a rod-shaped conducting member of non-magnetic material introduced axially into the drift tube and held at a lower potential than that of the drift tube. This rod expands the cylindrical beam and thus lowers the current density and hence the space charge in the drift tube. In an alternative construction, the permanent magnet drift tube is replaced by a cylinder of soft iron magnetized by a coil surrounding the cylinder and enclosed in a glass envelope. In other alternative constructions the resonators and the drift tube are made of soft iron, the cylinder 9 is omitted and appropriate magnetic. fields to produce the lenses are provided by a cylindrical permanent or electromagnet surrounding the envelope of the tube. Specification 597,511 is referred to.
