Abstract

540,034. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 6, 1940, No. 9933. Convention date, June 6, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode ray tube in which the ray is focused by a longitudinal magnetic field on to a screen over which it is scanned a collecting electrode for secondary electrons emitted from the screen or primary electrons reflected by it is arranged at an angle to the axis of the tube between the gun and the deflecting electrodes ; intercepting electrodes may also be provided between the collecting electrode and the deflecting electrodes and between the deflecting electrodes and the screen. The Figure shows a tube with a mosaic screen 2 of the ordinary type for television transmission. The collecting electrode 18 is arranged as shown, and has a central opening 19 for the passage of the ray. The tube is enclosed in a deflecting coil 8 and scanning at right angles to the plane of the paper is produced by deflecting plates 14, 15, shaped as shown, in conjunction with the magnetic field. Scanning in the other direction is effected by coils 16, 17 or by electrostatic deflecting plates. Between the electrodes 18 and the plates 14, 15 and also between the plates and the screen are arranged intercepting electrodes 20, 21 with slots 22, 23 for the passage of the ray. These electrodes are earthed and may be connected to a metallic lining 26 of the tube. It is stated that the ensuing screening of the space between the plates 14, 15 reduces distortion.
