Abstract

560,904. Cathode-ray tupes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Aug. 27, 1942, No. 12097. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1941. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] A television transmission tube of the type in which the.whole beam path is immersed in an axial magnetic field from coil 15, comprises in order along the tube an electron gun 3, first deflecting plates. 20, 21, an electron multiplier 32 ... 35, beam lifting plates 24, 25, second deflecting coils 22, 23, and a target 2. Both the gun and the multiplier are offset from the target centre, on opposite sides. The beam from the gun, after scanning deflection perpendicular to the paper is permanently lifted by plates 24, 25 to bring it opposite the target centre. The 'returning electrons are again lifted so as to strike the first electrode 32 of the multiplier, 'the electrodes of which have a width, perpendicular to the paper, greater than the first scanning. Apertured screens 50, 51, 54 are connected to the earthed gun anode 12. Electrodes 24, 25 are quarter-cylindrical coatings on the envelope 1, and the lifting space is rendered equipotential by similar earthed coatings 60, 61, completing the cylinder. A further coating electrode 71 enables the field directly in front of the target to be adjusted to eliminate rotational distortion of the magnetic focussing field. The target 2 is a photoelectric mosaic maintained nearly at cathode potential and reflects electrons to a variable extent dependent on the image element. To maintain zero axial field in the lifting space irrespective of the position of the'beam in the first scanning deflection, a small fraction of the scanning voltage from resistance 67 is added to the constant potential applied to the plates 24, 25 by battery 65. To eliminate the effect of photo-electrons collected by the multiplier, a very high frequency may be applied to the target backing plate 6. The useful output at the electrode 35 will then be modulated at that frequency and can be filtered from the photocurrent, which is unaffected by the potential of the target. Specifications 542,219 and 543,890 are referred to.
