Abstract

1,044,957. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1963 [Aug. 20, 1962], No. 32751/63. Heading H1D. An electrode assembly for the gun of a velocity modulation tube includes a control grid closely spaced from the cathode and formed by an assembly of similar open-ended cells, the distance between the electron-emitting surface of the cathode and the further surface of the grid lies between 0À25 and 0.50 of the cell spacing, and the depth of the grid lies between 0.10 and 0.25 of the cell spacing, whereby the beam may be controlled without the use of positive grid bias, and without undue aberration of the beam. The electron gun of a klystron or travelling wave tube includes cathode 11, grid 12, and an accelerating anode 20, beam current flowing whenever grid 12 receives a positive pulse from modulator 28. The modulator pulses are insufficient to drive the grid positive with respect to the cathode, thereby avoiding grid current effects, the emission of electrons into the beam from areas of the cathode directly beneath the grid elementswhich electrons provide the major contribution to aberration effects-being inhibited by the closeness, and negative bias, of the grid, which is made sufficiently deep to ensure that its surface furthest from the cathode can exercise an adequate control over the beam. The grid cells may be of square or rectangular cross-section; numerical values for the ratios between the grid cell spacing, the grid depth, and the grid/ cathode spacing, are given.
