Abstract

1389985 Thermionic valves VARIAN ASSOCIATES 10 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 37963/73 Heading H1D A linear beam tetrode switch tube comprises a concave thermionic cathode 6; a centrally apertured anode 4 and a collector electrode 5 having a cavity 17 with a constricted mouth for inhibiting egress of electrons; a tapered probe 20 in the cavity and focusing means 21 at the mouth of the cavity maintain a laminar electron flow of uniform current density in the mouth. The tube includes a Pierce type gun with a spherical dimpled cathode 6, a focusing electrode 8 and shadow and control grids 9, 6 with their apertures aligned with the dimples. The probe is conical and air, water or oil cooled; it may be insulated from and at a different potential from the collector and may be coated or grooved to inhibit secondary electron emission.
