Abstract
813,106. Velocity modulated tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 10, 1955, No. 33623/57. Divided out of 813,103. Class 39(1). In a velocity modulation tube the collector electrode 3, Fig. 3 is a metal block 38 having formed therein an electron receiving cavity 40 comprising a cylindrical beam entry portion 39, merging into a portion which flares inwardly in a smooth concave curve and terminates substantially in a point. The concave contour is such that equal areas receive equal numbers of electrons, so as to avoid formation of " hot spots " during operation, a suitable mathematical shape being discussed. The collector has a double helical passage 41, 42 for water circulation, each helical passage communicating with the other only at one end. The collector is given a higher voltage than the resonator to repel the positive ions to the resonator so as to prevent positive ion bombardment of the collector. The tube is preferably of the "floating kidney type" other aspects of which are described and claimed in Specifications 813,104 and 813,105.
