Abstract
1,189,715. Velocity-modulated tubes; ion pumps. SIEMENS A.G. 8 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36318/67. Heading H1D. In a velocity-modulated tube having a magnetically focused electron beam 1 and a collector 2 which is magnetically shielded-as shown, by iron cylinder 3-an ion getter pump is formed by the ionizing action of the beam 1 in the interaction region of the tube, and an ion trap formed by a metal plate electrode 4 of atomizable gettering material mounted within but insulated from the collector, and carrying at least one pointed pin extending parallel to, and symmetrically with respect to, the collector axis. The electrode 4 may be of titanium, is preferably held at cathode potential, and supports a single central pin for the case of a hollow electron beam, or, as shown, a plurality of off-axis pins 6 for a solid beam. The atomized gettering material is deposited upon the inner surface of the collector 2. Plate 4 may be insulated from the collector by glass bands or a ceramic ring.
