Abstract
976,781. Ion gauges. GEOPHYSICS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Aug. 8, 1962, No. 30325/62. Heading H1D. An ultra high vacuum ion gauge includes a source of electrons 20, an anode 32 for forming the electrons into a beam 22 directed towards trap means 36 for receiving the electrons, the trap means being arranged to absorb most of the X-rays 48 produced by the electrons, and a collector 34 for receiving ions produced by the electrons before reaching the trap means. The electron source may be a hot filament or a radio-active source which will give off sufficient electrons to ionize the gases within the gauge. A longitudinal magnetic H may be provided to focus the beam. The collector electrode 34 is circular and is positioned so that no primary or secondary X-rays produced within the device can strike it. Alternatively, the ions produced may be accelerated by potentials applied to grids provided adjacent the electron beam to a secondary electron emissive surface, the secondary electrons from which are amplified by an electron multiplier.
