Description
When working with high-voltage cathode tubes that serve to accelerate positive ions (for example, to study nuclear transformations), it is very important that charges in the tube are transferred exclusively by ions so that the tube does not produce an electron current causing hard X-rays. impede tube operation. Since electrons can form in a tube when ions collide with gas residues, the vacuum in the high-voltage tube, in which the ions are accelerated, should be very good. Electrons can also be formed when ions hit the electrodes and the electrons are knocked out of the latter. The electrons by the field applied to the tube are accelerated and, moving to the anode of the tube, acquire more energy and can therefore cause the appearance of hard x-rays. This can be largely avoided by using several successively located, accelerating electrodes, focusing the ground beam. Appropriate focusing (selection of voltage on the first accelerating electrodes, selection of the shape and distance to them) can be achieved so that ions do not fall in significant quantities on the intermediate electrodes, but the pia plate on which the test substance is applied was focused.
The drawing shows a diagram of the tube.
The object of the present invention is to fully decelerate electrons dislodged from a plate on which positive ions fall. Since the electrons knocked out by the ions from the plate have small initial velocities, according to the invention, in order to completely slow them down and, consequently, to prevent their passage into the tube, it is enough to apply a small retarding electric field applied between the above plate and the last accelerating tube electrode . This field inhibiting electrons (somewhat slowing down also iopes) can be created by a special voltage source, but the easiest way to do this is to divide all the voltage applied to the tube with a potentiometer that sets the voltage on the electrodes of the partitioned tube.
