Abstract

428,525. Cathode-ray tubes. BANKS, G. B., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 58, Victoria Street, London. Feb. 26, 1934, No. 5695/33. [Class 39 (i)] In television and like cathode-ray tubes comprising a disc-shaped Wehnelt electrode 11 with a single control aperture surrounding the cathode tip 2 and two disc anodes 6, 12 at positive potentials increasing from the cathode, the electrodes 11, 6, 12 are provided with cylindrical abutments 9, 13, 3 surrounding the whole path of the electrons passing through the electrodes. As shown, the cathode tip 2 projects through the electrode 11 a short distance and the electrode 11 has two abutments 9 of different diameters. The anode 12 is part of an electrode comprising a cylinder 3 surrounded by a focusing coil 10, overlapping at 15 the abutment 13 and having apertured discs 12, 14. Modulating potentials are applied to the electrode 11 or the anode 6. The dimensions of the electrodes are specified. In a modification in which the tube contains a high vacuum instead of a gas filling, one of the two abutments 9, the coil 10 and the parts 14, 15 are all omitted and the cylinder 3 surrounds two deflecting plates. A known tube is described in which a cylindrical Wehnelt electrode is separated by insulation from a first discshaped anode and the deflecting plates are surrounded by the second anode.
