Abstract
825,898. Eectron beam apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1958 [Aug. 13, 1957], No. 25577/57. Class 39(1). A cathode-ray tube, (e.g. for use in oscillographs), includes, in the order named, a thermionic cathode 1, a modulating electrode 4, a first anode 16, a pre-focussing electrode 17, an elongated hollow second anode 5 provided at or near the end nearest the cathode with an apertured diaphragm 14, an apertured plate anode 6 and one or more pairs of deflecting plates 8, 9. In operation, anodes 16, 5 are maintained at potentials positive with respect to the cathode while electrode 17 is maintained at a less positive potential so as to provide an electron lens which concentrates the electrons into a narrow beam in the region of the diaphragm 14. Thus the aperture in anode 6 may be made extremely small, enabling the deflecting plates to be arranged close together to obtain increased deflection sensitivity. without loss of image brightness due to cut-off of beam current by anode 6. Electordes 1, 4, 16, 17 separated by insulating spacers, may be mounted in an extension of anode 5.
