Abstract

442,513. Cathode-ray tubes. COSSOR, Ltd., A. C., Highbury Grove, London.- (Assignees of Ardenne, M. Von; 19, Jungfernstieg, Lichterfelde, Berlin) July 3, 1934, No. 19604. Convention date, July 22,1933. [Class 39 (i)] In order to prevent " origin distortion " the fluctuating deflecting potential is applied to a deflecting plate lying entirely on one side of the electron beam, while different steady potentials are applied to different parts of a plate on the other side of the beam. The Figure shows a tube arranged for two-dimensional deflection having plates 4, 7 to which the fluctuating potential is applied and plates 5, 8 each divided into two parts connected to opposite poles of a battery 6 the mid point of which is connected to the anode 3, or earthed. The parts of the plates 5, 8 connected to the same end of the battery 6 may be connected together inside the tube as shown. In a modification, instead of the plates at steady potential being divided they are made of high resistance material, so that a potential gradient occurs in them. In order to give room for the beam the plates at steady potential may be inclined to the axis of the tube, or when they are in two portions, the portion farther from the cathode is further separated from the other plate than the opposite portion ; in this case the lengths of the two portions should be so chosen that the two sections of the deflector condenser thus formed retain equal sensitivity.
