Abstract

1,173,354. Ionisation manometers. POLITECHNIKA WARSZAWSKA. 15 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 22409/67. Heading HID. In order to minimize the effects of stray radiation on the measurements obtained from an ionization vacuum gauge, the gas which is ionized is shielded from extraneous radiation by being enclosed in a chamber whose perforated walls 1, 2, 3 form the anode between which and a cathode 5 ionizing electrons flow. The ions then pass through an aperture 4 in the anode wall 3 and are collected by collector 6. To minimize photo-electric emission from the collector, induced by X-rays from the anode and ultra-violet radiation from the cathode, the collector is made small. Further shielding may be provided by inserting a solid shield (10), Fig. 3 (not shown), with an aperture corresponding to the aperture 4 between the anode wall 3 and the collector. Alternatively the anode wall 3 may be made of solid metal, Fig. 4 (not shown), and provided with a further shield (12) displaced from but covering the aperture 4. These shields may be connected to act as suppressor or modulating electrodes. To increase the sensitivity of the collector 6, it may be provided with a shield 7 of solid metal, mesh, or glass.
