978, 521. Producing and detecting neutrons. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 26,1963 [June 28,1962], No.24879/62. Heading G6P. [Also in Division H1] In a neutron generator of the type comprising an ion source from which ions are accelerated to bombard a target, the ion source and the target being within a common sealed envelope, a detector for detecting alpha particles emitted by the target is mounted within the envelope adjacent the target. In the drawing the tritium loaded target 6 is mounted within a cylindrical shield 7 and a solid state alpha particle counter 12 is mounted in a metal shield can 13 having an aluminium window 14, the window being opposite a port in shield 7. The counter 12 gives a measure of the neutron output, the can 13 reduces pick-up from plasma oscillations in the ion source and from R.F. waves in power supplies, and the window 14 stops light and ions elastically scattered from the target. The shield 7 is provided with a mesh 10 providing an aperture for ions to reach the target from the ion source formed by cathodes 15 and 21 and anode 19. A deuterium replenisher 3 and a Pirani pressure gauge 5 are mounted in side arms of the envelope, and the pressure within the envelope may be 20 microns. The counter 12 may be made by diffusing phosphorus into 3000 ohm ptype silicon, electrical connection being made to the phosphorus diffused surface by using a silver paste as a glue for a fine wire.
