Abstract

1,228,814. Heavy-ion beam tubes. INSTITUTUL DE FIZICA ATOMICA. 10 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 17173/68. Heading H1D. A neutron generator has at least one ion beam F emitted from source(s) S directed radially inwards towards a hollow cylindrical target 13 within which is placed a sample to be irradiated by neutrons generated by the ion bombardment of the target. Electrodes 9-12 accelerate the ion beam by the application of a D.C. or pulsed field. The tube envelope 8 is continuously pumped, or the envelope may have a pressure regulator in the form of a reversible getter containing deuterium or a mixture of deuterium/ tritium with a pressure gauge. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the ions are accelerated by a radio-frequency field set up in the envelope which is in the form of a coaxial cavity.
