Abstract

1,018,508. Ion sources. ATLAS MESSUND ANALYSENTECHNIK G.m.b.H. Oct. 25, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961; May 23, 1962], No. 40436/62. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer, heating of the sample to be ionized is effected by irradiation by a beam of light rays from a source located outside the vacuum chamber of the spectrometer, the rays being produced either by a laser, an ultra-violet source or both. As shown, a sample b to be ionized is arranged in an ionization space provided with electrodes 6, 7 for electron-collision ionization and defined by a casing 5 positioned in a vacuum chamber 1 of a mass spectrometer 2 having an analysing tube 3. Radiation from an external laser 12 reaches the sample b through a lens 13, the intensity of radiation being such that the sample is melted or evaporated. Modifications pertaining to spark discharge and gaseous sample ion sources are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
