Abstract
902,166. Ion sources. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 16, 1960 [Aug. 17, 1959], No. 28023/59. Class 39 (1). In a molecular beam ion source for use in a mass spectrometer in which a gaseous sample, e.g. uranium hexafluoride, is introduced into the source 3 through an orifice 23 by means of a pipe 4, the bore of the pipe is smaller than the orifice so that substantially all of the sample passes directly from the pipe through the orifice and the pipe is spaced from and hence thermally separated from the ion source. Hence corrosion in the region of the ion source and isotopic exchange memory effects are reduced. The discharge end 9 of the pipe may be formed of ceramic material. The other end 5 of the pipe is close to the endplate 2 of the ion source compartment in order to reduce the length of the pipe and so reduce adsorption memory effects. The electron beam 25 for ionizing the gaseous sample is projected through a channel defined by two apertured plates 19. Suitable dimensions are given. Specification 874,833 is referred to.
