Abstract

984, 158. Thermonuclear apparatus. M. O. VALUE CO. Ltd., R. L. FERRARI, and A. REDDISH. Nov. 14, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], No. 43087/62. Heading G6P. A mass of ionised gas is heated during passage along a cold cathode discharge tube and may be employed in a controlled thermonuclear reaction. Hydrogen gas, which is admitted to one end of a cylindrical glass envelope and removed at a central outlet, supports a discharge of the Penning type in which a positive-ion beam passes along the tube. The beam is collimated by a magnetic field directed along the tube axis. The cathode comprises two separate ion sources so as to produce two streams of ions in the beam, one faster than the other. An interaction between the two streams is said to occur which produces an amplification of the random thermal fluctuations in both the fast and slow beams thus raising the gas temperature.
