Abstract

1311591 Thermonuclear fusion K NOWAK 21 May 1971 [21 May 1970] 16761/71 Heading G6P In a unclear fusion device, the ion beams from the sources 6, 6a meet in the reaction zone within the magnet, 3. The Coulomb repulsion between the ions is neutralized by the electron beams from the electron sources 8, 8a and the plasma is contracted by a "self pinch" effect and the field of magnet (3). The ion beams are pulsed and the ion energies have a maximum of 100 KeV to provide a collis in cross-section of 0À03 Barn. The reaction zone may be provided with an internal grid to restrict electron scattering and those ions which do not react in a fusion process are prevented from impacting with the containment vessel wall by capture on further electrodes.
