Abstract
848,346. Nuclear fusion reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 19, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 19517/57. Class 39(4). In apparatus of the type in which a constricted discharge in a fuel gas is spatially stabilised by a trapped axial magnetic field, ion source means are provided for injecting high energy fuel gas particles into the discharge channel to increase the energy of the ionised fuel gas therein. As shown in the Figure, the apparatus may comprise a triode 1 to each quadrant of which is connected an ion source 5 and an associated charge-exchange chamber 7, which neutralises most of the ions by charge exchange in a neutral gas, arranged to inject high energy deuterium or tritium particles into the discharge. A suitable injection energy for the atoms is about 0À2 Mev and a suitable injection rate about 10<SP>20</SP> atoms per second. Specifications 830,252 and 830,254 are referred to.
