Abstract
938,987. Nuclear fusion reactors; electric discharge apparatus. K. NOWAK. Dec. 16, 1959 [Dec.20, 1958], No. 42770/59. Classes 39 (1) and 39 (4). A nuclear fusion apparatus comprises two beams of charged particles directed towards each other, each beam passing through a magnetic field, the polarities of the fields being such that one beam traverses its magnetic field in the opposite sense, to the other. In Fig. 1, a chamber 1 contains deuterium or tritium and a beam of ions is formed by a discharge between the anode 2 and apertured cathode 3; the ions pass through a control grid 4 and a magnetic field produced by a coil 5 to an accelerator 6 which may be a linear accelerator or a cyclotron. After leaving the accelerator the beam passes through the magnetic field of a coil 7 and collides with an oppositely directed beam, generated in the same way on the right-hand side of the apparatus, in a reaction space which is surrounded by a cooling jacket 8.
