Abstract
1,082,940. Particle accelerators. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 11, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 24866/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G6] Charged particles, e.g. electrons or protons, are accelerated in a linear accelerator on to a target of high atomic number to produce other particles, e.g. positrons or mesons, which are then accelerated in a further linear accelerator, the target being within a high intensity longitudinal magnetic field of sufficient length for the particles produced in a desired band of energies to rotate through 180 degrees around the field lines, before entering the second accelerator. The second accelerator 21 has a magnetic field of lower intensity than that of the target 32 and a short auxiliary field set up by coil 44 may be provided between the two fields. The target field is set up by an iron-encased electromagnetic polepiece lens 31 which is associated with a collimator and collector 41 for the input particles and a water cooled particle absorber 42 for output particles emitted outside a chosen maximum solid angle. The target is a water-cooled annulus and mounted on an arm 34 to rotate about its central axis. The input particle beam is focused on to the target by a pair of focusing quadrupole magnets (not shown). The input accelerator comprises a plurality of accelerator sections and includes a section in which the particles may be diverted for utilization instead of being allowed through to the target for conversion into other particles.
